BIOGRAPHY : ANTONY SUMMERS Artist/Painter
Born:
14 November 1947 - Sheffield, England
Studied:
1965 - 67 Chesterfield College of Art, Derbyshire. Met future wife, Jean Bradley, during Foundation Course together.
1967 - 70 Liverpool Regional College of Art/John Moore's University. BA (Hons) Fine Art/painting - with textile design.
Awarded John Moore's Fine-Art Scholarship.
Sept 1969 - Married Jean during final year of Degree course.
1970-71 worked with textile department at Liverpool, taught part time at Warbreck Secondary School - Aintree, Liverpool.
Moved to:
London - Battersea in 1971 to begin a career as a free-lance textile designer. Invited to show design portfolio at the Textile Centre's final "imprint" Exhibition. Sold several designs to companies in Germany, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong and at home in the UK. Made many contacts and worked with an agency - "Choice Designs".
Moved to:
Batley, West Yorkshire in 1972, to take up a full-time lecturing position within the School of Art and Design, (Surface Pattern Design). Continued to paint and develop personal work throughout my teaching career in spare time, weekends & holidays.
Jan 1978: Daniel Edward Summers born.
July 1982: Rachael Hannah Summers born.
1985 - 89: Course Leader for several design programmes.
1990 - 2000: Promoted to Senior Lecturer/Head of Dep't.
Sept 2000: Retired from teaching due to ill-health and heart problems.
2001: Moved into newly built garden studio to paint full-time.
Exhibitions:
1980:
Three man show "Summers, Wood and Townend" Huddersfield Sports Centre Gallery.
1981 - 84:
Paintings accepted for John Players Portrait Award, National Portrait Gallery - London (2nd painting sold).
1981 - 84:
Several mixed exhibitions with Batley School of Art, Kirklees Art Action Group - Huddersfield. City Gallery, Huddersfield "Portraits North" Open exhibition (1st prize). Crucible Theatre-Sheffield. One man show of portraits.
1985 - 88:
Painting commission portraits at home & in France.
2002:
Patchings Gallery - Nottingham Evening Post 1st prize winner.
2004:
"Not The Turner Prize" Daily Mail Competition - Mall Galleries, London. "Highly Commended".
2005 - 06:
Royal Society of Portrait Painters - annual open submission Mall Galleries, London.
2007 - 09:
Working on commissioned portraits and a series of triptychs, developing digital imagery for prints and cataloguing works for the website.
